Considered a part of the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, Chantilly, Virginia was named after a plantation built in the area just before the Civil War. On September 1, 1862 the Battle of Chantilly or Ox Hill was fought in the area now known as Chantilly, with Confederate and Union forces pitted against one another. The battle killed both Union generals and the Union Army retreated back to Washington. Today, the original site of the battlefield is covered by commercial and residential properties save for a small 5-acre county park which preserves the historic site. While its namesake plantation itself burned to the ground during the war, the town of Chantilly retained its name. Chantilly and its surrounding area saw a tremendous growth spurt during the 19th century, following the construction of the Little River Turnpike to Winchester. While the area was predominantly made up of farmland, the 1980s saw a significant increase in residential development in the cities and towns around Washington D.C., (including Chantilly) with developers putting money into the construction of large scale residential subdivisions and sprawling commercial areas. Considered a “boom town” because of current and future development plans, Chantilly is home to many professionals, thanks in part to its close proximity with nearby airports and of course, the capital.
