Are you a homeowner who wants to reduce your heating and cooling costs while staying comfortable year-round?, We bet you are! If so, you’re like millions of other U.S. homeowners turning to WiFi-powered programmable thermostats to save money on utility bills. In fact, it’s predicted that more than 23 million households will have a smart thermostat by 2029.
If you want to join them in the savings and comfort, we recommend considering the benefits of a Google Nest programmable thermostat. The Nest device makes monitoring energy savings simple and provides ways to make your comfort system work more efficiently. explore how the Nest thermostat works, how it makes your home more efficient and your life more comfortable, along with all the considerations you need to make before purchasing one for your own nest.
This Google Nest’s temperature sensor and control innovation learns from the way that you already use heat inside your home. Nest not only figures out your preferences throughout the week, it allows you to also make manual adjustments when needed. Once the WiFi device has been observing your habits and schedule for a few days, the report will help figure out when to adjust a few degrees, saving you money while keeping you comfortable.
Wondering if a Google Nest thermostat is right for your home? Here’s what you stand to gain when you upgrade to a smart thermostat:
For the ultimate in home heating and cooling convenience, use the mobile app to control Nest from your smart phone no matter where you are in the world. If you decide to work late, set the heater back an additional hour without being wasteful. Also, if you’re on vacation, you can let the WiFi thermostat know when the home will be empty so that it will not adjust based on the routine it has worked so hard to learn. Access the account settings at any time to switch up the schedule temporarily without worrying that it will erase the memory that the programmable thermostat has acquired.
A surprising amount of homeowners fail to turn their heater off at night when everyone is asleep to avoid the cold discomfort in the morning. Adjusting the thermostat or completely turning it off at night is the best time to see literally hours of energy savings with a programmable thermostat. Set it to begin heating a few minutes before your alarm is due to go off and enjoy waking up to toasty heat right when you need it, without the sticker shock when the energy bill comes. This is recommended for gas furnaces. Air handlers and heat pumps take more energy to return to the set temps.
Even if you don’t have the most energy-efficient HVAC system, you can still help it operate at maximum efficiency by using a smart thermostat. Because the thermostat operates independently of your heating and cooling system, you can easily install and start using it without any major overhauls or expensive equipment replacements. Once your thermostat learns your routine and preferences, and you’ve got your schedule locked in, you should see your energy use (and your bills) start to decline.
You can easily control your Google Nest thermostat from any smart device, and you can also link it to many other Nest products and functions in your home. Most Nest thermostats can be managed through the Google Home app (note: some early generation thermostats still work via the Nest app), where you can also control other smart home appliances. With the Google Home app, you can monitor and operate home security cameras, video doorbells, and much more. You can also set up your Nest thermostat to be voice activated through the Google Assistant or Amazon’s Alexa.
Whether you use the Nest app or the Google Home app, you should be able to access home reports about your energy usage. When you select your thermostat, simply click on “History” to view the previous couple weeks’ worth of energy usage. You can even look at usage patterns for each day, so you can see at what hours you used the most energy. This kind of data is powerful in helping you identify patterns, understand your habits, and make informed energy use decisions so you can be more efficient.
The great thing about the Google Nest thermostat is that it wants to help you save energy and money. Through the app, you’ll receive notifications about optimizing your energy use through the Eco temperature setting, reducing strain on the grid and saving money with the Rush Hour Rewards program, and taking advantage of utility company rebates. You’ll also get key notifications if you aren’t home and your system unexpectedly goes offline or isn’t working as expected. Just make sure you’re set to receive notifications from the System Health Monitor on the app.
Of course, there are always a few downsides with any tech product. But we feel that once you understand them, you’ll have the knowledge you need to make the right choice for your home, and make the Nest thermostat work for you. Disadvantages include:
The first and second generations of the Nest Learning Thermostat will no longer be supported in the Google Nest or Google Home app as of October 25, 2025. That means you won’t be able to remotely adjust the thermostat, check on energy usage, or update your programmed schedule. These thermostats will still work, but can only be adjusted manually. While this won’t impact anyone purchasing a new Nest thermostat, it will affect those who installed an earlier version or moved into a house that already had an early generation. It also means the company regularly phases out older devices, which means even if you buy a new one, you may have to replace or upgrade it down the road.
Google Nest thermostats are compatible with most HVAC systems, but there is a chance that it won’t work as intended with your specific air conditioner or heating system. Additionally, programmable thermostats in general are not recommended for heat pumps, so that rules out the Nest and others. If you do purchase a smart thermostat and then learn it isn’t compatible with your older HVAC system, don’t panic. You may still be able to make it work by adding a C-wire to your HVAC unit.
If you’re new to smart thermostats or smart home devices in general, it will take some time to learn how to use the Nest thermostat to maximize efficiency and savings. This is to be expected, so if you feel the app isn’t intuitive or user friendly, just give it some time. The thermostat will learn your routines as you learn how it operates, so after this initial period, your home automation will take over and you won’t need to constantly be worrying about your home’s temperature setting.
As with all smart devices, the Nest thermostat relies on WiFi to fully function. While the thermostat will operate even if you’re offline, you won’t be able to control it remotely or make adjustments from the app if your WiFi is down. While this is usually only ever a temporary issue, it can be a deterrent for some consumers.
If you’re ready to take advantage of the money savings from a programmable thermostat that you can monitor and program from anywhere, you can start this season off on the right foot and benefit from instant energy savings when it comes to heating and cooling your home.
