The city of Balch Springs can be found in Dallas County, Texas, and is considered a suburb of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area, AKA the “metroplex.” Settled in the 1840s, the city was named for one of the area’s early residents – John M. Balch. Balch was surprised to find a slew of springs on his property. Residents in town began referring to the springs on Balch’s land as Balch Springs, hence its name today. It’s interesting to note that the town retained its name even after Balch moved out of the area.
Starting out as predominantly a farm town, Balch Springs saw rapid population growth at the same time Dallas and the surrounding communities started to expand. The city was incorporated in June of 1953, in an effort to avoid annexation by Dallas. As of 2010, the population recorded in Balch Springs was just over 23,700 residents.
