While Bedford, Texas is considered a part of the “Mid-Cities” region between Dallas and Fort Worth, it’s technically a suburb of Fort Worth. The first settlers to arrive in the Bedford area settled in the 1840s. In the 1870s, Weldon Bobo relocated to the area from Tennessee, setting up a general store and gristmill. Bobo and the farmers collectively decided upon the name Bedford, after the county in Tennessee where many of them came from. The period of prosperity enjoyed by Bedford and its residents ended shortly after the turn of the century when the Dallas-Fort Worth Interurban rail line was built, with U.S. Highway 890 closely paralleling it. The addition of both a major thoroughfare and rail line effectively crippled poor Bedford, diverting travelers away from Bedford Road. Commerce in the city eventually dried up and businesses and residents moved out of town.
