Flower Mound, Texas is an incorporated town located in Denton and Tarrant counties. The area now known as Flower Mound was originally settled back in the 1840s by a camp of Presbyterians. By 1854 the settlers established the Flower Mound Presbyterian Church. Despite the presence of the church, the area didn’t see a significant increase in population for years to come.
Flash forward to 1961, when, in order to avoid annexation by Irving, Texas, the town voted to be incorporated. After receiving a loan from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the building of this new community commenced, going by the name Flower Mound New Town. While advertisements promoting Flower Mound were prevalent in the mid-1970s, the project hit a roadblock when residents threatened to disannex a part of the town. The project would eventually lose all of its federal loan guarantees, effectively stopping it in its tracks.
