Grand Prairie is a city located in three Texas counties: Dallas, Ellis, and Tarrant. The area was first known as Dechman after a settler named Alexander McRae Dechman back in 1863. In 1876, Dechman traded a portion of his “prairie” land to the railroad in an effort to ensure that the T&P Railroad would come through town. The railroad depot was given the name “Dechman,” as was the post office which opened in 1877. Confusion arose when the T&P Railroad designated the area Grand Prairie, based on some old maps from the 1850s, calling the span of land between Dallas and Fort Worth as the grand prairie of Texas. The Postal Service would eventually change the name of the post office to Grand Prairie to avoid confusion. The town of Grand Prairie was incorporated in 1909.
