Sachse, Texas is a city located in Collin and Dallas counties and is considered one of Dallas’ northeastern suburbs. The city was founded in 1845 by William Sachse, who was a Prussian immigrant. At the age of 25, Sachse purchased 640 acres of land from Collin County and built some cotton mills and gins, the first ones in the area.
Sachse donated 100 feet of “right-of-way frontage” through his land to the railroad in 1886. The price? A railroad depot in town and a new town name – Sachse. When the railroad first constructed the depot building, the name Sachse was misspelled “Saxie,” which led to many problems into the 1880s for Mr. Sachse when the Collin County tax collector hired him to be his bondsman. Unbeknownst to Sachse, the tax collector embezzled from the town and fled, leaving Sachse responsible for substantial debts. Sachse was forced to sell a significant portion of his nearly 5,000 acres of land in order to raise cash and pay down the debts.
