Brookeville is a town located twenty miles north of Washington D.C. in Montgomery County, Maryland. Brookeville was founded in 1794, and was named after Quakers, Richard Thomas and his wife Deborah Brooke. During the 19th century, Brookeville served as an agricultural market center for the surrounding area, and provided a trading post for the crops that were grown on the fertile lands. Brookeville is known for being the “Capital for a Day,” because this was the town President James Madison fled to in the war of 1812.
