Clarksburg, Maryland is a census-designated place (CDP) located in an unincorporated part of Northern Montgomery County. Named after Native American trader John Clarke, Clarksburg was established at the intersection of the major thoroughfare that connected Georgetown and Clarksburg and an old Seneca trail. One of Clarksburg’s earliest and most well-known residents was Ashford Dowden, who received a patent for 40 acres of land back in 1752 and built an inn. The inn in Clarksburg played a small yet notable role in history, hosting General Edward Braddock’s army during the French and Indian War and serving as a meeting house for the locals Sons of Liberty before the start of the American Revolution. It is also believed that President Andrew Jackson stopped in Clarksburg on his way to his inauguration, dining at the inn.
