Elkridge, Maryland a census-designated place (CDP) located right on the Patapsco River with the distinction of being the oldest settlement in Howard County. The settlement, previously known as Jansen Town, was originally developed with tobacco farmers in mind, with easy access to the river for trading. The town later built a seaport dock, Elkridge Landing, for use by the entire community. Jansen Town burned in 1825, destroying all of the original buildings at the landing and nearly all of the residents’ homes.
Among the many industries prevalent in Elkridge throughout history; pig-iron forging, basket weaving, paper, cotton and grist milling. The B&O Railroad also employed a good number of Elkridge residents back in the day. Given its age, Elkridge has numerous historical structures worth noting, including the Thomas Viaduct which can be found over Levering Avenue at the entrance to the Patapsco Valley State Park. Built in 1833, this viaduct has the distinction of being the oldest stone curved bridge in the world, not to mention the fact that it carried Tom Thumb, the first American-built steam locomotive and the first ever telegraph message from Washington D.C.
