Gainesville, Virginia is a census-designated place (CDP) found in Prince William County. Before the arrival of the Manassas Gap Railroad in 1852, Gainesville served as a changing point for stagecoach horses along the Fauquier & Alexandria Turnpike. After the railroad was established and a stop built at Gainesville, the town transformed itself into a major shipping point for grain, timber and cattle, remaining an important shipping point for cattle through the early 60s. Gainesville played a secondary, but still notable role in the Civil War where the nearby Thoroughfare Gap in the Bull Run Mountains was used by soldiers heading off to fight the infamous battles of Bull Run.
