Gaithersburg is a city found in Montgomery County, Maryland. Originally settled in 1765 as “Log Town,” a quaint little farming settlement, a large portion of the land grand was purchased by a Henry Brookes, who built his large home, Montpelier there in the late 1780s or early 1790s. Brookes’ son-in-law Benjamin Gaither inherited a portion of the land and subsequently built his own home there in 1802. Known as Log Town through the first half of the 19th century, by the 1850s residents had adopted the name Gaithersburg.
The arrival of the B&O Railroad to Gaithersburg in the early 1870s brought with it many things, including an elaborate Victorian-style train station designed by Ephraim Francis Baldwin, a part of his famed series of Victorian railroad stations built throughout Maryland. The arrival of the train station in town also aided in the growth of Gaithersburg’s population. Gaithersburg was officially incorporated as a city in April of 1878. It’s worth noting that Gaithersburg is home to only one National Historic Landmark, The Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory, which was built to help measure the earth’s wobble on its polar axis.
