The borough of Mechanicsburg is located in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, just eight miles or so west of Harrisburg and is part of the Harrisburg-Carlisle metro statistical area. Settled in 1806 and incorporated as a borough in 1826, Mechanicsburg takes its name from an early settlement of mechanics that built and repaired Conestoga wagons in the early part of the 19th century.
The completion of the Cumberland Valley Railroad line into Mechanicsburg back in 1837 helped to increase the local population. Mechanicsburg actually served as a water station along the railroad where workers were given the opportunity to restock the locomotive’s wood supply and pump water. The railroad also provided Mechanicsburg with ample trade and commerce opportunities, connecting the borough with the outside world and paving the way for the construction of new grain and feed companies, lumber yards and factories all along the train route. The railroad also played a crucial role during the Civil War, transporting both troops and supplies.
