Poolesville is a town located in Montgomery County, Maryland. The town is nestled in the middle of the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve, although, technically it’s not considered part of it. Poolesville is named after brothers, John Poole, Sr. and Joseph Poole, Sr. who purchased 160 acres of land in the area of Maryland where Poolesville now sits. The settlement was incorporated in 1867.

Poolesville holds historical significance, thanks in part to its role in protecting the capital city during the Civil War. Realizing that the Potomac River was shallow enough to cross during certain times of the year, the Union Army stationed thousands of troops to nearby Darnestown and Poolesville to watch for Confederate incursions into Maryland. The Poolesville Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
