Rockville, Maryland is a city located in the middle of Montgomery County, where it serves as the county seat and makes up part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. Before coming to be known as Rockville, the area went by several different names throughout the course of history, including; Hungerford’s Tavern, Daley’s Tavern and Owen’s Ordinary, the latter of the three being a small rest stop located on Rock Creek Main Road, which later took on the name Rockville Pike connecting George Town and Frederick Town.
In the fall of 1776, the Maryland Constitutional Convention agreed to divvy up Frederick County into three smaller areas, one of them being Montgomery County. While George Town was in fact the largest town in the county, its location farther south was deemed less than ideal for a county seat, therefore it was decided that the smaller, but more centrally located Rockville would be a more viable option. Before settling upon the name Rockville, the city was referred to as both Montgomery Court House and Williamsburgh, with Rockville not becoming popular until later when the District of Columbia was created. Rockville was officially incorporated as a city in 1860.
