Also known as the White Rose City, York, Pennsylvania is a city found in York County. Founded by Settlers from nearby Philadelphia in 1741, York previously went by the name Yorktown from the 18th century and early 19th century, named after the English city. Incorporated as a borough in 1787, York served as a temporary capital of the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War.
Civil War historians know York as the largest town in the North to be occupied by Confederate soldiers, when Major General Jubal Anderson Early and his division spent a few days there at the end of June, 1863. Laying the town under tribute, Early collected food and supplies, including clothing, shoes and nearly $30,000 in cash from the citizens and business owners of York before leaving the city on orders from Commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, Robert E. Lee. After the Civil War, York remained a regional agricultural center, and at the same time started to turn into a burgeoning industrial center. York was officially incorporated as a city in 1887.
